    MR A. V. THOMPSON
    ALP COICE
    FOR HINDMARSH

ADELAIDE, Wed: Mr. Albert Victor Thompson has won the ALP pre-selection ballot for Hindmarsh, which means that he is almost certain to be elected for that seat at the federal election, and thus succeed Mr. Norman Makin, the newly appointed Australian Ambassador to Washington, who has represented Hindmarsh for the past 25 years.

Mr. Thompson, who is 59, will have much in common with his predecessor. Like Mr. Makin, he is a church man. He is a member of the Salvation Army, and preaches on other churches. He, too, graduated to a political position through the trade union movement, being a member of the Transport Workers’ Union.

The Hindmarsh returning officer announced yesterday that Mr. Thompson had defeated Mr. J. F. Walsh by 1362 votes to 933. There were 21 candidates.
